iTunes Alert: FPM Live From Tokyo

My iTunes alert went off this morning, and I know some people will be interested in this one.

[Fantastic Plastic Machine](http://www.fpmnet.com/) played the Apple Store in Ginza back on 3/21. The resulting iTunes album – 5 tracks, $4.95 – [is available on the US store](http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=252161473&s=143441). Knowing how rarely FPM material appears on the US store, and how frequently it disappears later, you might want to jump on this now.

Track listing:

  1. Xiang Xiang vs. Strings In Heaven
  2. Dance Dance Dance Dance vs. Tell Me
  3. Never Ever vs. Love Is Psychedelic
  4. Fanfare (Tahiti 80 Mix) [Fpm Live Edit]
  5. Medley: Why Not? / City Lights (Fpm Samba Mix) / Beautiful Days

FPM fans should not pass this one up. Nor should anyone who enjoys high quality dance music.

Good God Given

Back in 2004, a Nickelback MP3 made the rounds of the webinets. This was not your typical Nickelback MP3 – or perhaps it was doubly typical. With one Nickelback song in the left channel, and another in the right channel, it mashed into itself beautifully. It was an indictment against formulaic pop music, presented simply and plainly. As Ryan at Dead Parrot Society [wrote](http://www.deadparrots.net/archives/music/0406this_is_how_you_remind_me_how_bad_your_music_sucks.html):

> The mesh is freakishly, almost unbelievably, perfect.

It was referred to at least once as “musical incest”. The idea of doing such a mashup has never left my brain.

Today, I was listening to [Year Zero](http://yearzero.nin.com), the latest Nine Inch Nails album. I haven’t listened to the album enough to have formed a complete opinion on it, so I’m still in the “feeling it out” stage. While I’ve started having a few songs grow on me, something felt off, and I tried to put my finger on what. And then I realized that I was having a hard time telling two songs apart.

Twenty minutes in Live made the point even more defined than I could imagine.

This isn’t a finished bootleg – I don’t know if I’ll complete it, to be honest. It’s also not as straightforward as the Nickelback mash was – some instrumental sections are looped to start the vocals at the same point, and there’s a little bit of an edit going into the chorus. Still, I think it gets the point across pretty well.

On the left channel: Nine Inch Nails’ “The Good Soldier”.

On the right channel: Nine Inch Nails’ “God Given”.

Constructed in Live 6, BPM set to 100.

Pop on some headphones and enjoy.

NIN ARG

It appears that [Mr. Reznor](http://www.nin.com/) is working in an [alternate reality game](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_reality_game) to help hype up the approaching release of his new album, [year zero](http://yearzero.nin.com/).

**WARNING**: Many of the links below go to sites with fractured web design and possibly disturbing text, images, or sound. Click at your own risk.

The plot seems to involve some sort of military drug called “Parepin”, and an underground resistance, set some time in the future. The first site, [IAmTryingToBelieve.com](http://www.iamtryingtobelieve.com/), was found by reading the bold letters on the new tour t-shirts. Subsequent sites found include:

* [Another Version Of The Truth](http://anotherversionofthetruth.com/), which contains a “resistance” message board hidden in the depths.
* [Be The Hammer](http://bethehammer.net/), a website belonging to a soldier in the 105th Airborne Crusaders.
* [105th Airborne Crusaders](http://105thairbornecrusaders.com/default.htm), “the proudest unit in the service of protecting and policing God’s green earth.”
* [The First Evangelical Church of Plano](http://churchofplano.com/), a church that practices “neighborhood cleansing”.
* [Consolidated Mail Services](http://www.consolidatedmailsystems.com/), some sort of citizen…mail service, I guess.

The [Unfiction boards](http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=18272) are starting to buzz, but the [echoingthesound board](http://www.echoingthesound.org/phpbbx/viewtopic.php?t=20265) is running away with it.

The game is apparently being PMed by [42entertainment](http://www.echoingthesound.org/phpbbx/viewtopic.php?t=20265), they of ILoveBees.

Wish I had time to contribute, but I’m just going to have to read the summary from afar.

(Thanks to Ryan Godinez for much of the information for this post.)
