I May Already Be A Winner

Remember those photos I took the day of the British Consulate bombing?
The day I took them, I was relatively happy with the distribution the photos saw – got used a couple of times on Gothamist, got a lot of views on Flickr, etc. On the advice of Suw, I also uploaded them to NowPublic and attached them to the breaking news about the bombing. I haven’t had a lot of time to play with NowPublic as of yet, but from what I saw of it, it was interesting.

I just received notification from Michael Tippett, who runs the site – apparently they have a contest going on for Citizen Photojournalism. And they just announced the first week results.

I apparently won.

I find it very strange to wrap my head around the fact that some pictures I took on a whim have earned me $100, but hey, I’m not complaining! Here’s to hoping I pull through for the $500 grand prize.

British Consulate Pictures

If you haven’t heard, the British consulate in NYC had two homemade grenades set off in front of it this morning. No casualties, no injuries, but the front window is damaged.

The consulate is in fact one block directly over from our branch office on Lexington, which I needed to go to this morning anyhow – so I grabbed the Olympus and took as many shots as I could before the battery crapped out.

Here’s the flickr photoset, for those who want to see:

Justifying My Horrible Photos

I’ll admit: despite occasional lucky shots, my Sidekick 2 doesn’t always take the best photos. Sure, some of it’s due to bad shots on my part, but the camera certainly has its quirks. Photobloggers better than I have managed to
tame the thing, but I’ve still been a little unimpressed by the quality at times.

But now, I can rest happily, knowing that it doesn’t suck in the slightest compared to Rosie O’Donnell’s cameraphone. Ye gods.
