Month September 2000

Producers and Consumers

In an effort to follow through with something I promised a while back, I have finally packaged up all I’m using for my news script, along with proper MySQL schema, and made it available on my page. The link is off to the bottom right, feel free to leech it there. Disclaimer: Use at your own risk. Your web page may start to be smarmy and irritable like mine after installation. Coming up next may be the calendar script, or possibly a version of gfortune I compiled for OS X.

Monday Night Blah

Well…it’s nearing midnight, and I figured it might be about time to do one of those fun news post things. Now, do I go with the unnumbered list, or the paragraph with boldface? Hey, how about stream of conciousness? Went home this weekend to fix the computer, played a crapload of Chrono Cross. Fun game. Also rented the UFC game for DC this weekend, which is fucking nuts in the way that I love fucking nuts games. Shame it has to go back Wednesday. Too much work to do this week, mainly in the school arena, what with the 3 problems sets and one writeup for 264, oh and the 4 prelims next week isn’t helping my demenor any. Moby tickets on sale Wednesday at 9 am, details are below, cash or check only, none of that Cornell card shit. Chuck D is this Thursday, still don’t have most of my tickets accounted for, but oh well, what can you do? Freeverse site is coming along well now that Steve and I are working in unison, I think we may actually pull off something extremely spiffy but as long as I keep this stream of conciousness crap gooing, typing at a ridiculously high speed while slouched in my chair, I don’t think the site is going to get done any faster. Wow, that was different. Maybe I’ll do that again in the future.

Full Moby Details

For those of you who STILL don’t have the facts straight, here are all the details AS I KNOW THEM with regards to the Moby show. Venue/Time: October 15th, 8 PM. It will be located in Bailey Hall. Acts: Opening for Moby will be the trance band hybrid. Moby is also apparently bringing a 9 piece orchestra accompaniment. Tickets: Tickets go on sale for students THIS WEDNESDAY, September 27th, at 9 AM at WSH as usual. Advance tickets are $18 (at the door is $20) for students, and I would fully expect the tickets to sell out to the Cornell community. I do not know when the line is forming, but I would assume we aren’t giving out line numbers. The ticket limit is 2 per student. General public tickets go on sale Friday the 29th, at $23/$25 – available at WSH, Ithaca Guitar Works, and Ticketmaster if there are any left. Who is Moby?: If you don’t know (and there are people like you out there), Moby is a hugely popular Grammy-nominated electronic artist who has gone platinum, possible double. He puts on an awesome show from everything I’ve heard. Any more questions? Email/IM/find me.

Monday Morning RAW!

I’m in such a good mood, I may as well post some news. Guster! – they rock. Unbelievably so. The whole “Fall Thing Thing” went off very well, with Guster and Damn Brandy coming off the best in my mind. Granium was alright, and Poetic Alchemy…well, I’m very tired of them. The crew was alright, and I think everything went decently. Very enjoyable show. Package?! – I have a mystery package at the service center. What could it be? Damned if I know. Tune in later today. Chuck D – I have 4 front row tickets to Chuck D’s lecture on the 28th. If anyone’s interested, please let me know. Tickets are $2. That’s all for now.

Week 3 Completed

Another week, another 12 classes, another 3 problem sets. Another 21 meals, another 49 hours of sleep (approximately), another ridiculous amount of soda consumed. Let’s get on to the important stuff: - Guster Show! Today! 4-9PM on the Arts Quad! Free show! $1 Pizza and Soda! Come! Meet And Greet Greeks With Cheap Eats And Local Beats! Or something. - Quotefile has been updated, and is now starting to actually look like it has some content in it. Hurrah! - A clarification on some news from last time – I am not leaving Utterercom. I will be working on both sites – while I know that people have their doubts that – I won’t give into the green, I’m sure I can do it. - I should have a copy of OS X, uh, soon – it looks very cool thus far. You know where to reach me.

Two semi-major updates

1) Moby is going to be in Bailey, not Barton as we had hoped. Ugh. 2) As of this afternoon, I officially am on board with MacGamer / Mac Gamer’s Ledge as a news editor, similar to my role at Utterer.com. Hopefully being a more legitimate member of the press will help me with…well, I don’t know what.

News Buffer Overflow

So much stuff has happened today that I feel compelled to post NOW as opposed to LATER. Can’t you see I am serious? (Can you do any less?) Two exciting programs going on soon on campus – Jane Goodall is here on Friday, and Chuck D will be here on the 28th. I got tickets to Goodall, but I will probably give them away as I have no serious vested interest in seeing her. Chuck D is an entirely different matter. Yet again, soliciters are pushing their wares in my face for “a good cause” – this time, the Ithaca Rape Crisis Center. Okay, sounds good…what are they pushing? Blow Pops. Alright…how much? 50 cents. What the HELL is up with that? Temple of Zeus has them for 9 cents plus tax. I don’t mind giving to charity, but I do mind getting ripped off. And I also mind getting solicited 12+ times over two round trip walks from home to the arts quad. In happier news, our power was fixed today – the old circuit breaker was a 6 Amp – so the fridge is back in, so soon we will have liquid refreshment for all. Finally, I must plea that if you need a hilarious song about Al Gore, there’s only one place to go – Eddie Schmidt’s mp3.com section. Please download a couple songs, I promise they’re funny. And if not, you can hurt me.

Week 2 Complete

Another Saturday night, another web page update. This week zipped by rather quickly, mostly sped along by the addition of the Dreamcast to our room. Currently at 4 games, 4 controllers, and one memory card, it’s a great time killer and homework delayer – but don’t worry, it’s all getting done. At utterer.com, Frank has been out for the week, so the news updating goodness has completely fallen on the shoulders of Paul and I. It’s been a mostly slacking week on that front. My project for Freeverse is growing closer to our deadline; I’m trying to get around all the snags that have shown up as best I can, but most everything is going to end up being a “wait and see how this all pains out” sort of thing. Not how I like it, but we don’t have a choice. Apple Campus Rep job – I still don’t know. Karl is waiting to interview one more guy, and I had a talk with Kevin at the store about various things I would like to do if I had the job. I’ll let you know as soon as I know. I’m starting to get creative juices again, so I may start putting up some experimental content soon. But it really depends on if I can produce anything worthwhile, as usual. We’ll see what happens. I promise to update the quotefile soon, so hang in there, silly folks. Until then, keep coming back, I promise to make it worth your while.

Week 1 Completed

Well, the first full week is down. Most of my bitching about classes is in previous news posts, so you may have to wait a little bit to see those again. Nothing is too bad, though. Doing a little upgrade work on the page today – after getting a little annoyed over load times, I found the culprit – my banners ads. The fact is I was using them for a pseudo-counter, so that I could get some sort of idea on how many people had been visiting my site. In about 4 months, I took in 2700 or so impressions, so 500 a month is better than I did ever before. So, hurrah. Keep on coming back. Anyhow, I turned off the logging (except for clickthroughs – those I still want to track), so hopefully we’ll all get a nice speed boost. Also new at long last, now that my machine is at 98% completion, is my webcam. Now you too can peek in on my life in 5 minute intervals (approximately). There’s a link in the header lest you need to find it later. Also, Kate updated her page today, including a cute banner ad that you should feel free to use on your page. Just letting all you Kate fans know. :) Hope everything is well with all of you – life will surely get more hectic for me soon enough.
